UK’s cheapest supermarket revealed – could you save £20 on your weekly shop by switching?

THE UK’s cheapest supermarket has been crowned and it could save you £20 on your shopping bill the next time you go.

Aldi is named March’s cheapest supermarket after a survey was conducted by consumer champion Which?

The experts compared the cost of 41 popular items from eight chains as part of a monthly investigation.

The cheapest was Aldi, which charged £72.54 on average across the month for the basket of groceries.

This is £20 cheaper than the most expensive store on the list, Waitrose, which charged £92.55 for the same basket of items. That’s 27% more.

But close behind Aldi was Lidl, costing £72.79 for its items. So only a 25p difference.

Third on the list was Sainsbury’s, charging £80.27, followed by Tesco which charged £81.58.

Second to last was Ocado whose total came to £88.03 – just over £4 cheaper than Waitrose.

Ele Clark, Which? retail editor, said: “We know people are suffering through the worst cost of living crisis in decades and the price of food and drink has skyrocketed no matter where you shop.

“However, our monthly supermarket analysis shows you could save £20 on a basket of everyday groceries at the cheapest supermarket compared to the priciest one.”

Which? also compared the cost of a larger trolley of 137 items – the original 41, plus 96 more.

This included some well-known brands too such as Andrex and Cathedral cheese.

However, this list didn’t include discounter supermarkets Aldi and Lidl because they don’t stock the full range of branded products like the others do.

Coming out cheapest was Asda, which has carried the title since January 2020.

Its total cost £343.91, which was £9.21 cheaper than Sainsbury’s in second place, whose total came to £353.16.

Waitrose was last again – finishing at a whopping £41.83 more expensive than Asda and costing £385.74.

Ways to save on food bills

It’s always a good ideas to look for ways to save on your supermarket weekly shop, regardless of where you go.

For example, there are cheap food clubs run by local community groups or charities floating around.

They’re different to food banks because you don’t need to be referred by anyone to join one.

These clubs link up with local supermarkets, who donate food nearing their sell-by date. They are usually run from public places, such as church halls.

There’s also food waste apps to make use of.

The Too Good To Go app, for instance, matches you with local food outlets that have food left at the end of the day to sell for less.

You pay from £1 to £7 for a ‘magic’ bag or box from a local business that contains a surprise mix of products.

Morrisons does a “Magic box’”, which usually costs around £3.09 and will contain at least £10 worth of food.
