Sombre mood in Kyiv as celebrations cancelled over concerns country may face fresh ‘Russian provocations’

Ukraine marked a tense independence day on Wednesday, with no parades or parties because of the threat of Russian attacks, while US was expected to announce a further $3bn in aid.

It is 31 years since Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union, and six months to the day since Russia launched a war that aimed to reverse that step away from Moscow’s control.
