Exclusive: Prospect of genome editing and lab-grown eggs prompts HFEA to consider how laws may cope
The fertility watchdog is discussing how to “future-proof” any new fertility laws to ensure they could deal with radical scientific advances, including human genome editing and lab-grown eggs that in theory could allow same-sex couples to have biological children together, the Guardian has learned.
As it pushes for the biggest overhaul of fertility laws in 30 years, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) is planning for a range of new reproductive treatments that scientists say could be just a few years away from the clinic, according to a leading scientist who is advising the HFEA on its proposals.
