Twitter users will soon be able to tweak their posts with an edit button, a feature that has been its most requested for “many years,” a company official said Tuesday.

In a statement, the social media giant said it had been working on the feature since 2021 and will begin testing it in the coming months.

The statement took a dig at prolific Twitter user and critic Elon Musk, who asked his followers on Monday if the site should have an edit button — “yse or on,” he joked.

“No, we didn’t get the idea from a poll,” the company said.

Tuesday’s announcement came after Musk, ranked the world’s richest person according to the Bloomberg Billionaire index, bought roughly a 9 percent stake in the company and Twitter’s CEO said Musk was joining its board

Musk promised “significant improvements” to the company.

Twitter’s head of consumer products, Jay Sullivan, said Tuesday that users have long wanted to fix embarrassing mistakes and typos, a problem they’ve worked around by deleting and tweeting again.

But he added that the button could be misused to alter the record of a public conversation.

“Therefore, it will take time and we will be actively seeking input and adversarial thinking in advance of launching Edit,” he said. “We will approach this feature with care and thoughtfulness and we will share updates as we go.”
