It’s been one of the most highly-requested features since Twitter launched back in 2006, and now the app has finally confirmed that it is testing an Edit tool. 

Twitter has begun internal testing, and will soon expand the test to some users of its Twitter Blue subscription service. 

The company revealed early this year that it was working on a tool to allow users to edit tweets after they are posted, which is ‘our most requested feature to date’.

The firm said tweets will be able to be edited ‘a few times’ in a 30-minute window immediately after they are published, and edited tweets will appear with an icon, timestamp and label to make it clear the original post has been modified.

Users will be able to click to see a tweet’s edit history, which will show past versions.

How does the Edit tool work?

Users will be able to edit tweets ‘a few times’ in a 30-minute window immediately after they are published.

Twitter said labelling tweets and giving access to a post’s history is important because ‘they help protect the integrity of the conversation and create a publicly accessible record of what was said’.

In a blog post, the social media company said the feature would remain in a testing phase, with only a few users, for some time while it analyses how it is used.

Some critics have warned it could be exploited by bad actors seeking to spread disinformation.

‘Like any new feature, we’re intentionally testing Edit Tweet with a smaller group to help us incorporate feedback while identifying and resolving potential issues,’ Twitter said in its blog post.

‘This includes how people might misuse the feature. You can never be too careful. 

‘Later this month, we’ll be expanding Edit Tweet access to Twitter Blue subscribers.

‘As part of their subscription, they receive early access to features and help us test them before they come to Twitter.

Twitter Blue, available in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, is a monthly subscription service that gives users additional features not available to the wider public.

The news will come as music to the ears of many Twitter users, who have been calling for an Edit tool for years. 

One user tweeted: ‘Twitter be adding everything that’s unnecessary but not the edit tweet option.’

Another added: ‘Seriously, why doesn’t Twitter have an edit feature. 

‘Just about every tweet I’ll find a typo AFTER the fact and it drives me crazy. It’s that it Twitter? Are you trying to drive me mad?’ 

And one joked: ‘If Twitter brings an “edit tweet” function we will all be geniuses.’ 

TWITTER LAUNCHES ‘TWITTER BLUE’ IN FOUR COUNTRIES – BUT UK USERS ARE MADE TO WAIT 

In 2021, Twitter officially rolled out its subscription service called Twitter Blue in four countries – the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. 

Twitter Blue charges users $2.99 monthly fee to access exclusive features – but many users do not seem wiling to pay extra for the social media platform.

The most exciting feature seems to be the Undo Tweet that lets users edit a tweet before it goes live. 

It also features Bookmarks, which allows users to save individual tweets into folders, and Reader mode, which converts threads of tweets into an article-like view.

But UK users are still waiting to test out Twitter Blue. Once it’s rolled out in the UK, it will cost users £2.49 a month. 

Twitter, however, emphasizes that this does not mean it is trying to phase out the free version of the platform.

Former CEO Jack Dorsey has focused on tweaking Twitter in the past to try to attract more people and increase revenue.
