But while Carphone Warehouse offers £105 for a trade-in on a OnePlus 6 phone, MusicMagpie offers only £26.

Second-hand gadgets are a huge market these days, with many people keen to save on an iPhone or Xbox by buying a used one.

High Street chain CEX will buy them over the counter — after making sure they work — for a set price.

Lots of online firms, including MusicMagpie, offer to buy them. They give you a rough price and then you send it in — though they might lower the price when they see the item, for example, if there are more scratches than declared.

But prices can vary hugely. Sites such as sellmymobile.com and compareandrecycle.co.uk compare available prices.

We looked at what is on offer for five popular phones across different firms. Prices varied by up to £190 — see our results below.

Apple consistently offered less credit for used iPhones than all the firms we researched.

Apple phones are the most popular across the board and hold their value best — and lots of firms offer to buy them.

Others such as Huawei do not hold resale values as well.

You could avoid the middlemen and sell direct via eBay, Facebook or at a car boot sale.

It can take longer but sometimes it might earn you more, especially if your phone has been unlocked. These are easier to sell as they are not linked to a particular network.

Remember to delete all your personal information by resetting the phone.

This prevents photos, log-ins and credit card details stored on smartphones from getting into the hands of crooks.

Microsoft returns to the fold

MICROSOFT has unveiled a new laptop that folds into a tablet and a new version of its folding phone.

A week after Apple launched new iPhones, Microsoft unveiled six products as it looks to take a bite out of its rival. Here’s what it launched in the virtual event.

The Surface Duo 2 has a triple-camera system and 5G support

THE phone has two screens linked on a hinge and folds out like a book.

With the Duo 2 update, Microsoft has made the displays bigger and curved at the edges.

This curve means a new notification bar can be seen along the hinge, for updates on calls and messages.

Meanwhile, multi-tasking has been improved, with greater ability to drag and drop items between screens, and more compatibility across the two screens for gaming. Crucially, there is now also a new triple-camera system for higher quality photos, as well as 5G support for the first time.

The Duo 2 is out on October 21, starting at £1,349.

MICROSOFT’S new flagship laptop has a dramatic new look and form-factor.

It can be used three ways and adjusts between them with a unique hinge system. As a normal laptop it looks just like Apple’s MacBooks.

Users can pull the screen forward over the keyboard making it a tablet on a stand – handy for watching telly.

The hinge also allows it to be pushed flat into a tablet-like mode for writing and drawing.

It’s called the Surface Laptop Studio because it takes its functionality from the adjustable Surface Studio desktop.

It won’t be out until next year and will cost from £1,799.

On the outside, it has a 13-inch touchscreen, while the detachable keyboard – which costs an extra £259.99 – has a charging slot for the new Surface Slim Pen 2 stylus.

There’s also a 10 megapixel 4K rear-facing camera.

In the UK, prices will start at£999 and it will be on sale from October 28.
