VEG peel and cut ends go in the bin in most households but they can be used to grow more tasty food.
Here’s how to get a second bite from the cut-offs that you usually chuck . . .

ONIONS: These are some of the easiest to grow from scraps. Spring onions will bounce back from the ends that are usually chopped off and thrown away.
Just leave a few centimetres of stalk coming out the top of the roots, pop them in water and you’ll soon have a fresh crop. You can also regrow yellow and red onions from scraps.
Cut off the root end, with an inch of onion. Put it root-side down in a shallow dish of water or soil in a sunny spot.
Keep the water fresh or the soil hydrated and shoots should emerge after a couple of weeks. You can then plant in soil and the onion will regrow — usually over two to three months.
GROWING GREENS: When you’ve used celery stalks, put the base, root-side down, into a dish of shallow water.
Within a few days, it should start to sprout new stalks. You can then plant the sprouted celery into soil.
And you can use a similar method for lettuce, again using the base that is usually thrown away to grow a fresh batch of leaves from the top.
SPUDS: From around a quarter of a potato — ideally with at least two root eyes — you can grow another one to eat.

It’s a good idea to let the potato dry out first for a day. Then put into water with both the eyes submerged but some of the spud in the air. Toothpicks are a good way of suspending the potato in water.
Roots should start to grow and it can then be moved into soil in the garden.
