WITH spring around the corner, now is the time to get your home ship-shape.

A spot of DIY can mean the need for some heavy-duty tools.

But you can save space and cash by borrowing rather buying.

Here’s how . . .

GOOD NEIGHBOURS: Local WhatsApp groups foster a greater sense of community and members are usually more than happy to lend a hand — or items.

If you already have one set up, ask if anyone has the tools you need and if you can borrow them for a short time.

And consider organising a group if there’s not one in place, you never know when it might be useful.

Or most communities have a local Facebook group and it’s also worth asking for help on these sites.

LIBRARY OF THINGS: Some local councils are running initiatives where residents can borrow a full range of items including tools and other items you may only occasionally need to use but have no room to store.

Library Of Things tends to have reasonable prices too.

For example, you can expect to pay around £6 a day to rent a drill in listings I searched.

See library ofthings.co.uk.

I was quoted £7k to replace my bi-fold doors but did it myself for £11 instead – people say I’m a total ‘DIY Queen’ now

Ask your local authority where your nearest one is running.

FAT LLAMA: You can pay to borrow almost anything from people nearby through the fatllama.com.

As well as DIY equipment and tool hire, you can rent sewing machines, electric scooters and musical instruments.

The site has more listings in cities so if you live in a rural area, you may have to travel further to get what you need.

A quick search for a ladder in my local area, showed one a half-hour drive away, which I could rent for just £5 a day.

B&Q: The DIY store has a service where you can rent tools.

The costs are not that cheap but you can still save if it’s for a one-off use.

For example, a carpet cleaner that costs around £500 is £69 to borrow for the weekend.
