‘SLEEP tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite’ is getting harder to do with outbreaks doubling, according to pest experts Rentokil.

NIGHT CRAWLERS: It’s vital to act if you find bugs as one female can lay hundreds of eggs, meaning an infestation can quickly take hold.

Bed bugs are nocturnal which can make them difficult to spot.

During the day, the bugs tend to hide in cracks with hotspots including mattress seams, bed frames, headboards and the edge of carpets, according to Rentokil.

CLEAN UP: If you spot bugs or tell-tale signs, wash infested bedding on a high temperature — at least 60C — for 90 minutes.

Ideally, dry laundry in a tumble dryer for a 30-minute cycle.

Wash your bedding every couple of days to help remove any bugs or eggs and give the bed, mattress and bedroom a good vacuum.

Then take it out of your home to empty into the bin in a sealed bag.

You can spray infected areas with a bed bug treatment spray, £1.95, from onlinepoundstore.co.uk.

Or tea-tree oil can also get rid of the pests.

Mix a few drops with water in a bottle before spraying it on the bed.

PREVENT: Bed bugs are expert hitch hikers so taking a few measures can help prevent bringing them into your home.

When you return from travelling, it’s a good idea to avoid emptying the contents of your suitcase on or near the bed.

Instead, wash your clothes as soon as you return.

Rentokil’s Paul Blackhurst said: “The risk of encountering bed bugs remains relatively low. But it’s worth taking easy precautions to prevent infestation in your home.”
