Customers were unable to pay for their groceries at the tills, and company bosses admitted that most online shops would not be delivered.

Some in-store customers had to leave their shopping behind on Saturday afternoon, as several branches abandoned trying to take card payments altogether in the afternoon.

The issue was fixed late on Saturday afternoon, and Sainsbury’s issued a statement to say that the problems had been due to an overnight software update.

Since then the Supermarket has apologised to its customers who were affected by the outage and issued a £10 voucher for any inconvenience.

A post was made to the official Sainsbury’s Twitter account on Sunday, it read: “Morning, sorry you were affected by this issue yesterday.

“Any refunds due will be returned back to your bank account in the next 3-5 working days.

“The £10 voucher is for the inconvenience caused by the outage.”

Customers have been taking to social media to let others know that they have received their vouchers.

While a third said: “I received my voucher, sadly got to shopping now.”

The £10 voucher has been added to all groceries online customer accounts.

Other supermarket chaos

Sainsbury’s was not the only supermarket experiencing technical difficulties over the weekend.

Just hours after Sainsbury’s reported its issues, Tesco was also forced to cancel some of its home deliveries due to technical problems.

Tesco did not specify how many customers or which regions are affected.

But a Tesco spokesperson said at the time: “We are working to fix a technical issue which has meant we have had to cancel some online orders that were due for delivery today.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience.”

As well as affecting home deliveries the technical issues also affect shoppers’ ability to visit stories for click-and-collect orders.

Customers were being updated by an email that read: “Hello. We’re really sorry, but we can’t deliver your groceries today because of an issue with our system.

“You haven’t been charged for the order.

“If you’d like to reschedule your order, please use our website or the Tesco app.”

Meanwhile, Tesco has been forced to make a huge change to its Clubcard promotions after a huge row with Lidl.

The discounter scored a victory over the use of a yellow circle logo to highlight Tesco’s Clubcard Prices in-store.

The supermarket lost its appeal against a ruling that it infringed the German discounter’s trademark over the use of a yellow circle on a blue background.

Lidl uses a yellow circle in its main logo while Tesco uses a yellow circle logo to promote its Clubcard price promotion.

Tesco has said it will honour the judgement and it will update its Clubcard Prices logo in the coming weeks.

While the appearance of the promotions will change, the deals will stay the same.

Lidl sued Tesco in 2020 shortly after it started using the yellow circle.
