YOU could make a big saving on festive train travel if you get on board now.

Maybe October is too soon to think about Christmas, but this is the week to sort your festive travel tickets if you want to bag a bargain.

With the 12-week advance booking window now open, this is the time to get the biggest discounts . . .

ADVANCE FARES: Rail companies sell a limited number of “advance” tickets, which means you can now pick up these reduced fares for the Christmas period.

If you’re heading back in the New Year, then it’s definitely worth buying your ticket this side of the festivities. This season, a lot of rail companies are offering flexible extras. For example, LNER are offering fee-free changes to your journey up to 6pm the day before you travel. Until December 31.

GET A RAILCARD: National Rail offer a range of discount cards. These include one for 16 to 25-year-olds, 26 to 30-years-olds, the Family & Friends Railcard and the Two Together, which offers a third off any standard and first-class off-peak and advance fares if two named adults are travelling together.

For the same price, you can get the Family & Friends Railcard for up to four adults and four kids which gives you a third off most adult fares and 60 percent off kids’ tickets. It doesn’t count for peak travel time so it’s best to check that you’re covered before buying the card.

SPLIT YOUR TICKETS: Instead of buying tickets for the full journey, book separate tickets for chunks of it – you could save loads. TrainSplit will even crunch the numbers for you.

DON’T MISS OUT: Booking via nationalrail.co.uk is usually the cheapest way. However, I do like the simplicity of the Trainline.com app, as you can use the e-ticket. Go via Quidco to get up to four per cent cashback. Buy a railcard through them and they will give you £5 towards your next trip.
