A reported explosion last month at Northeastern University was a hoax and the man who said he was injured has been arrested, according to FBI statements made in court documents.
The FBI Boston office announced an arrest in a tweet Tuesday morning, but court documents viewed by NBC News show that the package detonation never occurred.
Jason Duhaime has been charged with falsely conveying a bomb threat and lying to federal agents during his interview, according to the FBI.
The incident was reported on Sept. 13. Initial reports said that a package that had been delivered to Holmes Hall on the school’s main campus detonated. A man said to be a university employee reportedly suffered minor hand injuries.
But the FBI says in the court documents that a student’s accounts of the events directly contradicted Duhaime. The agency also said it found a threatening note that was allegedly located with the package on Duhaime’s computer.
