In response to a shopper’s query over the malfunctioning, Tesco tweeted: “We’re aware of a number of issues currently affecting our app and website.

“Some customers are seeing error messages, while for others the website is running slowly.

“Our IT team are aware and are currently investigating.”

Online shopper David Sharpe tweeted: “@Tesco, I’m currently buying 6 bananas for £7 if your website isn’t fixed soon!”

Tesco replied: “Hello there, unfortunately we are aware of there being issues with the website at the moment.

“But please be assured that the IT team are working as fast as they can to resolve this.

“In the meantime, however, I am sorry for the inconvenience caused here.”

In response to another shopper, Tesco suggested that for their pending order: “I would advise that you check from time [to time].

“Thanks for your patience.”

And Clubcard holders are also angry with the technical issues.

‘Dave’ tweeted earlier on Thursday that he was in a Tesco store “with no self-serve tills open” and he had been told that it was a “global issue”.

He added there was “no Clubcard pricing as a result.

“Can you confirm the difference can be reclaimed once resolved?”

Tesco spokesperson

Tesco replied: “We’re currently having some technical issues at the moment which is causing some problems at our end and the customers, I’m afraid.

“I am very sorry.

“Our IT team are currently working to have this issue resolved as soon as possible.

“Please keep hold of your receipt so that this can be resolved for you in store once the app is up and running again.”

The Down Detector site also highlighted the issue, saying that user reports are “indicating problems at Tesco”.

According to the detector website the majority of problems are being encountered when signing in (56 per cent).

This was followed by issues using Tesco’s website (28 per cent) and the retail giant’s app (17 per cent).
