A selection of Tesco locations are checkout-free stores, known as GetGo.

It means customers can shop without having to scan any of their items at the till.

Shoppers are charged instead based on checking in via an app, cameras around stores and weight sensors on shelves.

But the hi-tech stores are not always able to identify items that have been reduced in price, it’s been revealed.

The supermarket has warned that a “small number” of reduced to clear items may not scan at their lower price.

That’s because the cameras and sensors don’t register price drops on yellow sticker products.

These items can be subject to pricing changes several times a day.

It means that if an item doesn’t have a reduction sticker applied, it will go through at full price.

Shoppers have been told they must alert a member of staff to apply the discount manually via signs in store.

They read: “Ask a colleague if you’ve picked reduced to clear item to buy.

“Or you may be overcharged”

“Find a colleague or wait in a blue circle.”

The worker will then scan the item using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) so the shopper can still leave without the traditional checkout process.

Tesco said it is looking for a solution to the issue and allow shoppers to buy yellow sticker items “like any other”.

To avoid being overcharged at a GetGo store, you should pay attention to any yellow-stickers on your groceries.

Keep them at the top of your haul so you don’t forget to get them manually reduced by a staff member.

There are currently four Tesco GetGo stores in the UK.

These locations are in High Holborn, Chiswell Street and Fulham Reach in London and Aston University in Birmingham.

The new “hybrid” stores first opened back in 2021 in Holborn offering the option of checkout-free shopping or traditional tills.

Earlier this month Aldi shoppers were also warned to check their receipts after fans spotted a “disgusting” self-checkout issue.

Those scanning items at Aldi’s self-service tills had noticed that reductions or promotions are not automatically applied to their grocery bills.

Instead, you have to call over a member of staff who will then manually input the savings.

Checkout-free stores have been popping up across the UK with major retailers trying them out as the next step up from self-checkouts.

Thousands of shops have already moving away from traditional manned tills to be replaced by self-service areas.

Amazon opened it’s first physical checkout-free store in 2021 in the UK following success in the US.

At Amazon Go technology tracks the items you put in your basket. and you’re charged automatically when you leave via the Amazon Go app.

Aldi also opened its first checkout-free store in the UK in 2021, in Greenwich, London.
