Legal battle: Lidl accused Tesco of copying its yellow circle logo
Tesco could face an £8million bill to rebrand its Clubcard after losing a legal battle against Lidl over its yellow circle logo.
The German discounter had accused Britain’s biggest supermarket of riding on its coat tails by using the logo when it launched its Clubcard discount scheme.
But Tesco denied that it had infringed the trademark and took a challenge to the Court of Appeal, arguing there was ‘no basis’ for the decision.
Lord Justice Arnold, however, yesterday dismissed this attempt.
Tesco is not expected to appeal and had suggested during legal proceedings that the cost of a rebrand could be as much as £7.8million. Tesco said it was disappointed while Lidl declared it was ‘delighted’.
