TESCO is set to make another big change to its Clubcard points – and drivers will be livid.

From June 14, you will collect one point for every two litres of fuel you buy.

As it stands, you get one point for every £2 of fuel you buy.

The current average cost of a litre of unleaded in the UK is 146.38p, according to the RAC, so two litres cost roughly £2.92.

That means the majority of people will be getting less Clubcard value from buying fuel.

The change excludes Esso filling stations with a Tesco Express store.

For Tesco Bank customers, the number of points you collect will also depend on whether you use your card to collect points for fuel, to pay for fuel, or both.

Naomi Willis, from Skint Dad, a money-saving website, told The Sun: “Tesco’s decision to reduce the Clubcard points on fuel purchases is disappointing news for its loyal customers who rely on these savings to spend on food or have a treat through the year.

“It’s important for retailers to consider the impact their actions have on customers and strive to provide the best value possible, especially during these challenging times.”

It comes after Tesco announced it is reducing the value of Clubcard vouchers spent with reward partners.

From June 14, Clubcard vouchers will only be worth double their value if exchanged at any of Tesco’s reward partners – down from three times their value.

It means they won’t go as far as they used to at Alton Towers, PizzaExpress and Hotels.com.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “Clubcard unlocks the best value from Tesco – from thousands of exclusive prices through Clubcard Prices, to money off your groceries and fuel, or accessing as much as double the value of your vouchers with more than 100 Clubcard Rewards Partners.

“We are making a change to the way you can collect points when buying fuel at Tesco Petrol Filling Stations but rest assured that you can still benefit from Clubcard points every time you fill up with us.”

How does Tesco’s Clubcard work?

Tesco’s Clubcard lets shoppers earn points as they shop which can then be turned into vouchers for money off food or other partner schemes.

Every time you spend £1 in store and online, you get one point when scanning the card or app.

As it stands, you also get one point for every £2 spent on fuel, although this will change from June 14.

One point equals 1p, so 150 points get you £1.50, for example.

But you need a minimum of 150 points to request a voucher in the first place.

Crucially, Tesco Clubcard customers can get exclusive discounts on a number of products in-store and online.

For example, Clubcard members can get a lunchtime meal deal for £3.40 while those without have to pay £3.90.

Tesco isn’t the only loyalty card that offers customers points for filling up on fuel.

Sainsbury’s Nectar Card owners can get one point per litre of fuel bought from an Esso garage.

They can also get two points for every pound spent on carwash or lubricant products at participating Esso branded service stations.

A number of garages run their own loyalty schemes too.
