Tesco opened if first GetGo store in central London in 2021, offering its first checkout-free service.

Customers check-in to the Tesco store on an app, pick up the groceries they need and can walk straight out without visiting a checkout.

The supermarket giant currently has four GetGo stores located in London – Aston University, Chiswell Streeet, Fulham and High Holborn.

The latest change means that shoppers will no longer need to download or use the app in order to shop in the store.

The Sun understands that it will be taking customer feedback to decide whether to roll the change out further.

Sarah Quiggin, Tesco head of store customer experience, said the new tech should “save time on scanning items and will reduce queuing in store.”

She added: “We will be watching closely to see how customers react to this potential new option of having a list of their shopping presented to them automatically.”

It comes after Booths revealed that it was ditching self-service checkouts after customers complained that they take longer than manned tills.

The upmarket retailer has branches in YorkshireCumbriaLancashire and Cheshire.

Self-checkouts were first introduced more than 10 years ago in major supermarkets and now the craze has spread to even more retailers.

Their arrival has meant supermarket chains are cutting back on staffed checkouts.

But recent survey showed that many shoppers find self-service checkouts too troublesome to use.

They can often be unsuitable for shoppers who want help with packing or need to pay by cash.

As a result, some shoppers instead opt to head over to a staff manned checkout, leading to long queues and disgruntled customers.

Many supermarkets instead have opted for scan as you go systems as an alternative to self-checkouts.

They allow customers to scan as they browse, either using their smartphone or a handheld device.

Then most shops allow you to check out at a completely different area to other shoppers, saving time in queues.

It means that shoppers can keep track of how much they’re spending as they go around the aisles, allowing you to budget and stick to your list.
