The minimum order charge of £4 is usually only applied if customers buy less than £40 worth of items.

When items are substituted, or are out of stock, then the extra fee shouldn’t be applied.

But a glitch means it has been added to some orders, leaving shoppers fuming.

One customer asked Tesco why they were being charged for something that wasn’t their fault.

They said: “Hilarious that @Tesco are charging us £4 because their fridges broke down.

“We can’t fulfil 15 of the items you ordered but don’t worry we’ve charged you extra for it.”

Another raged: “Why am I being charged a £4 fee when YOU are the ones unable to supply half my delivery order??

“And suspiciously, everything ‘out of stock’ is from the fridge or freezer section!”

A Tesco spokesman said a “very small number of customers” were incorrectly charged the basket fee.

He added: “We’re really sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

The retailer is asking affected customers to contact the customer service team for a refund.

That means customers should check their online receipts and contact Tesco for a refund if they think they’ve been charged the fee in error.
