TESCO customers have fumed at the megastore online after they confirmed a “silly” new change in their stores.

A shopper has vented at the supermarket chain after noticing there were no staffed tills after 10pm – and the store replied to say that the change is permanent.

Disgruntled shopper Naomi Ferguson said she was at the store late at night to do a “big shop” but was stunned when noticing there were no staff there to help her scan and bag her items on a manned till.

Calling out the supermarket on X (formerly Twitter) she said: “why do none of your stores have a manned checkouts after 10pm anymore?

“I went to do the big shop and had to self scan a £100 shop with no help.

“After playing ‘avoid the restocking cages’ in the aisles it wasn’t the experience I’d expected. Not overly impressed.”

Tesco were quick to reply to Naomi and confirmed that from now on nobody will be on-hand to scan and pack customer’s goods late at night.

Replying to her, Tesco employee Scott, said: “Hi Naomi. We’ve made this change because we’ve noticed that customers aren’t using the staffed main checkouts at the start and end of the day, or as much as they used to.

“Thanks for your feedback, we’ll get your comments passed on to the relevant teams. Thank you, Scott.”

The seemingly casual response certainly confirms the news – which could put shoppers off from going late at night – that anyone visiting the store after 10pm will be left to deal with their shopping by themselves.

Appearing to be unhappy with the response, Naomi clapped back at Scott – mainly because she said it “makes the process longer” for her.

She said: “I get that, but to not have a single staff member able to jump on a till seems quite silly.

“There were a few people doing late night big shops when we were in the store and it just makes the process longer.”

Tesco is not the only supermarket chain that’s been making headlines recently.

Asda recently pulled the plug on several chemists that operated in-store for customers to get essential medical supplies because of “low customer usage”.

And Poundland has begun rivalling Iceland in the frozen food department, after announcing a new a roll-out of iced-goods sections in over 60 stores.
