All the rules for shops including Primark, B&M and Poundland explained

SHOPPING rules will look a little different from Monday as lockdown restrictions fully lift in England.

Shops including Primark, B&M and Poundland won’t have to enforce things like social distancing and mask wearing but they still might encourage it.

The legal requirement for face coverings will be dropped from July 19, so the retailers will no longer have a legal mandate to get you to wear one.

That’s great news for some shoppers and staff who may have been eager to see the back of restrictions.

But others will still want to carry on with the previous rules put in place, and bosses have expressed they’re happy to help anyone in-store feel as safe as possible.

Brits currently face a fine of up to £6,400 for not wearing a mask in shops, but that will be dropped after the weekend.

We could also see things like queues outside of shops disappear as retailers no longer need to limit capacity.

You also may have been told to shop alone before where you could, but from Monday you’ll be able to get back to a bit of retail therapy with a pal if you choose.

If you live in Scotland or Wales though, the rules are slightly different and you’ll find you still have to wear masks and follow other restrictions.

This is what retailers have said about what to expect on Monday so far.

Primark

At the moment the Primark limits the number of customers allowed in at any one time to allow for social distancing.

As there will no longer be a restriction on this from Monday you probably won’t have to do this, but the store could still ask you to wait outside at busy and peak times.

Primark hopes customers will continue to follow the recommendations on wearing masks in stores too.

The store will also be keeping up perspex screens and continuing the use of hand sanitisation stations.

A Primark spokesperson said: “We want our customers and colleagues to continue to feel safe in our stores.

“Even though it will no longer be a legal requirement, we hope that people will continue to think of others and wear a face covering if they can.

There’s also clear signage and floor decals to remind you of the current rules but we’re not sure if they will remain beyond Monday.

Fitting rooms are still closed in Primark stores for now, but we will update you when we know exactly when these will open up again.

B&M

You won’t have to wear a mask at B&M if you don’t want to under the new government rules.

If the store is busy though you might want to consider it as the recommendation is to wear one in a crowed enclosed space.

We haven’t heard back from B&M yet on whether the store will enforce the mask wearing rules after the weekend, but we’ll update this story once we know more.

At the moment B&M stores have protective screens at checkouts and these aren’t likely to leave by Monday.

That’s so staff can remain protected too at the checkout regardless of anyone in store choosing to wear or not to wear a mask while shopping.

Staff have sanitiser, face masks and gloves available too but it will be up to them to choose to use the protective gear.

There shouldn’t be a limit on the amount of people let into the store at any one time, but you could find you’re asked to wait at peak times as it’s still down to the business to decide.

Cash is accepted but B&M ask you use contactless payments where possible and the limit remains at £45 for this.

Poundland

Poundland has said it will continue to follow the guidelines that have been issued from Monday.

The store said its screens at checkouts and sanitising stations will stay for now so customers can continue to shop with confidence and colleagues can be supported and protected.

The store currently gives out free masks if customers need one but as the rules change on Monday you might have to purchase the protective coverings yourself if you wish to wear one in store.

Again, the store won’t have to make you wear one and of all the retailers, it’s giving you as a shopper the control over your choice to wear one in the shop.

A spokesperson for the retailer said: “We recognise that the rules in England change on Monday to make mask wearing a personal choice and we’ll update our signage to reflect that.

“While it’s a personal choice in England, we understand why many customers and colleagues will want to still wear them.”

That means the way the store looks inside might be a little different from Monday, and instead of seeing signs that ask you to please wear a mask, the language might be changed to “recommend” or “encourage”.

H&M

H&M won’t be fully enforcing things like mask wearing but the retailer has said it encourages customers to do so, so they can be considerate of others and provide the maximum safety.

A H&M spokesperson said: “With the safety of our colleagues and customers being our top priority, H&M encourages colleagues and customers who can wear a face covering to continue doing so.

“This will provide an additional layer of protection and safety for everyone.”

The store is operating with a limited number of open fitting rooms at the moment, so if you don’t need to you, will likely be asked not to hang around the waiting area from Monday too.

There’s only one person per fitting room allowed and the shop encourages you to try your items on at home if you can.

Cleaning routines will remain and the separate entrances and exits you might have found coming in and out of the store will also stay in place.

Some, like Tesco, Aldi and Lidl want you to keep wearing masks specifically from Monday.
