MOTORISTS need to get used to updates to the Highway Code aimed at keeping all users of the roads in one piece.
This includes drivers having greater responsibility to ensure cyclist safety, and giving way to pedestrians at junctions.

If you fail to keep abreast of the changes, which took effect late last month, or fall foul of the rules of the road more generally, you risk getting fined, or worse.

HOLD THE LINE: It is illegal to hold a phone or a sat-nav while driving. You must have hands-free access or you risk being hit with a £200 fine and getting six points on your licence.

UNDER PRESSURE: It is the law to have properly inflated tyres with a tread depth of at least 1.6mm. Fail to comply and you could be hit with fines of up to £2,500 per tyre. Halfords has an LED digital tyre pressure gauge costing £21.60. At Argos, you can pick up the RAC compact tyre inflator (12V) for £17.
SMILE, YOU’RE ON CAMERA: A dash cam that records collisions or incidents could help you in an insurance claim. At Halfords, the Nextbase 522GW front-and-rear dash cam bundle is down from £249 to £199, and the Garmin Mini 2 dash cam is £89.99 (£99 elsewhere). At the Original Factory Shop, the Motorola 2.7in HD cam is reduced from £49.99 to £33.
IN CHARGE: Keep your phone powered up with an in-car charger. Wilko has a double-port USB charger for £4.
