PEOPLE are only just noticing a big change to bottles of Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite – and shoppers have branded it “the worst invention of the year”.

Millions of bottles of the fizzy drinks now come with the cap attached – a move designed to help recycling efforts.

But there are plenty of people who are not on board with the green gesture, calling for the drinks giant to “please change them back”.

“Sprite Zero is my new favourite soft drink,” said one beverage buff, “only tarnished by the bloody awful attached caps, now found on all Coca-Cola products.”

“Enough is enough” said another “after half an hour cleaning my fridge as yet another bottle leaked due to the stupid attached cap”.

“I’m now purposely cutting them off and throwing them in general waste.”

A third moaned: “These new caps are a real pain.

“Understand the reasoning behind having them attached for recycling but so difficult to recap properly the bottle leaks and the coke goes flat.”

Someone else branded the new bottles “a nightmare'” for anyone with dexterity issues.

One fuming fizz drinker even branded it “the worst invention of the year.”

They said: “Caps attached to the bottles to recycle them together…. you can’t close the cap securely unless you snap it off, you snap it off and you end up with cuts trying to close the cap!

“Someone overthought that one and missed the problems.”

Many have called the change – which means the cap remains attached to the bottle instead of twisting off completely – badly designed.

But others have welcomed the switch. One previously said they “actually love” it and that it means they “never have to worry about losing the cap, and I can still screw it back on”.

Coca-Cola started rolling out the new attached caps for the first time last year for 500ml bottles.

Over the summer the new design started rolling out to 1.5L bottles of Fanta, Diet Coke and Coke Zero.

The drinks giant aims to get the new caps on all drinks by early 2024, including fizzy faves like Dr Pepper and Sprite.

Jon Woods, general manager at Coca‑Cola Great Britain, said at the time: “This is a small change that we hope will have a big impact, ensuring that when consumers recycle our bottles, no cap gets left behind.”

Coca-Cola has been contacted for comment.

Although both bottles and caps have been recyclable for years, Coca-Cola found that many caps were being discarded instead, prompting the new design.

Lilt was also affected before the totally tropical beverage was discontinued early this year.

The drink instead has been renamed as Fanta Pineapple and Grapefruit.

Coca-Cola is not the only one shaking up its packaging.

Discount chain Lidl has announced that it’s ditching use-by dates on milk, following a host of other supermarkets.

Over at Walkers, some crisp multipacks are now being produced in paper packaging.

Parent company PepsiCo said environmental goals were also behind the change.

Meanwhile fast food giant McDonald’s has completely cut back on their plastic packaging deploying new paper-based cups, lids and cutlery.
