Many Brits are turning to cheaper alternatives to heat their property this winter as energy bills skyrocket in a cost of living crisis.

Martin urged all homeowners to check their hot water cylinders as temperatures struggle to climb into double figures.

The MSE pointed out faulty or insufficient insulation around the cylinder could be pouring your money down the drain.

If water is cooling down quicker than it’s designed to, more cash is being spent to re-heat it unecessarily.

As reported by the MSE, the Centre for Sustainable Energy revealed fitting proper insulation could reduce heat loss by 75 per cent.

This would include using a hot water cylinder jacket – which can be bought for just £18.

It should measure 80mm thick or more, and The Energy Saving Trust estimates this simple move could save Brits £45 per year.

“For most, this will be a DIY job as you just need to wrap it around the hot water cylinder and secure it with string or something similar, but do consult a professional if your tank is hard to reach or you’re unsure,” Martin Lewis wrote on for MSE.

“It is recommended that you buy a cylinder jacket that displays the British Standard Kitemark,” he added.

Martin explained how millions are owed by their suppliers for several reasons.

Meanwhile, the MSE also shared his top tips on how to slash compulsive spending – and it could save you hundreds.

And, he offered his “golden rules” for anyone with a savings account and how taking action could help pocket extra cash.
