THE IDYLLIC coastal home of a famous British artist that looks like it could be on a Caribbean island has gone on the market for offers over £1.5m.

With the crystal clear blue seas and white sandy beaches around it, Ferryman’s Rest could easily be mistaken for a tropical haven in the Bahamas.

It was once the home of late world renowned artist John Miller, who is famed for his vivid scenes of beaches.

But where exactly is this beautiful paradise located?

You may struggle to believe it but the picturesque home is found in the UK, perched above the golden sands of Porthkidney Beach, near St Ives in Cornwall.

Miller regularly drew inspiration from the incredible views right in front of his four-bedroom home and art studio.

His prints of white sandy beaches, azure seas and cloudless blue skies proved extremely popular with homeowners in the 1990s and 2000s.

Musician Chris Rea used one of his seascape paintings for the front cover of his 2000 album King of the Beach.

Miller moved from London to Cornwall to become a full-time painter in 1958. He died at his home in Penzance in 2002 after a short illness.

Ferryman’s Rest, a four bedroom house, comes with the former art studio that is now a separate two-bedroom property and an ideal holiday let.

Estate agents Lillicrap Chilcott say the property is in “an utterly astounding” position with “glorious awe-inspiring views” over Hayle Estuary and across St Ives Bay to Godrevy Lighthouse.

The home has 1,425 sq ft of accommodation with a kitchen, open-plan living/dining room, conservatory and seven bedrooms in total.

The Beach House has 586 sq ft with an open plan living space on the ground floor and two bedrooms and a shower room on the first floor.

Outside there is a large sun terrace, a lawned seating area, a boat house with planning permission and its own private steps leading on to Porthkidney Beach.

The property was built in the late 1960s and the current owners have had it for 12 years.

Right behind it is the West Cornwall Golf Club and St Uny’s Church.

Jack Greenwood, from Lillicrap Chilcott, said: “The views at Ferryman’s Rest are exceptional and the position is just mesmerising.

“It does feel like you’re in a different part of the world there. The sand is like nothing else I have seen before. If someone said it was in the Caribbean, you would believe it.

“It’s by far the best location in Cornwall I have been to, it really is magical.

“The area does have its own microclimate and the light in St Ives is unique, which is why it is so popular with artists.

“I know a lot of John Miller’s artwork and when you arrive at this property you can instantly picture it and see exactly where he painted.

“The calmness and serenity there is what hits you. The beach is popular with locals but not that well known by visitors from out of county as there is no car park and it’s not as accessible as other beaches.

“It’s not even a minute walk from the house to the beach, it is like walking from upstairs in your house to the downstairs.”
