THE sun has got its hat on – and it’s hot enough that you need to slap on lotion.

Half of us do not bother unless on foreign breaks but the right creams and sprays are just as important here in Blighty.

And it has never been cheaper to protect you and your family, if you know where to shop . . .

FACTOR IT IN: I have always rated the five-star protection of Boots’s Soltan range. The family bundles are great value. At the moment, the Family Essentials pack is my favourite.

It includes SPF15, SPF30, SPF50+ and aftersun (all 200ml) as well as an SPF30 face cream — and is usually £22 but currently has a third off, at just £14.67. Or if you need less, pick up two bottles of the Protect & Moisturise SPF50 for £4 each and get a free Minions water bottle.

SAVE: £7.33

ONE-HIT WONDERS: Those who are forgetful might want to try a once-a-day cream — even if I do end up applying a few times, just to be safe. Home Bargains’s Calypso range is very good value and a bottle of the Calypso SPF30 Once A Day has an RRP of £16.99 but is just £5.49.

SAVE: £11.50

SPRAY OKAY: The Asda Protect Refreshing Clear Sun Mist SPF30 offers top protection and value, consumer watchdog Which? found. At £4.50 for 200ml, it is cheaper than the Ambre Solaire Dry Mist Fast Absorbing Sun Cream Spray SPF30, 200ml at £8. Great for cooling off if feeling a bit sticky.

SAVE: £3.50

ALL IN THE NAME: This year B&M has some brilliant deals on top brands. Get a transparent make-up bag with 100ml bottles of Malibu SPF20, SPF10 and aftersun for just £3.99, when a similar pack at Superdrug is £7.49. Pick up a tube of Cien Sun Kids Sun Cream SPF50+ at Lidl — good for any age really, and a steal at £1.99 for 100ml. Aldi has a Mamia SPF50+ bottle at £1.49 for 75ml.
