As announced during the showcase, Starfield will feature over a thousand planets to explore.

Fans were expecting a huge open world, following on from developer Bethesda’s most popular open-world game, Skyrim.

These planets are said to be a mix of hand-crafted and procedurally generated worlds, meaning that some would be made by elements fed into an AI.

However, the split between man-made and generated planets was not revealed, but it seems Howard has the details.

Xbox fans outraged that Starfield will run at 30fps – and why they shouldn’t be

He revealed that only around 10% of planets would show signs of life.

This includes both the tribes that were shown in the presentation, and the unique wildlife.

The others would simply be barren wastelands, which can only be used to gather materials and resources.

It seems likely that these 100 or so planets that contain life are the handcrafted ones.

This is because during the showcase, Bethesda put a heavy emphasis on how the wildlife is tailored to the environment of the planet they live on.

A hundred planets is still a very high number, and it’s good to know that a high quality approach went into them.

For comparison, No Man’s Sky was a disaster at launch because it used AI and procedural generation to create its planets and creatures.

The developer later went back and began to handcraft elements for each planet, which has done a lot to sway public opinion on the game.

It seems as if Starfield is intended to take this approach from the start, adding in extra planets for world-building and resource management.

Still, the announcement left fans disappointed, as they feel Bethesda is backtracking on statements made during the Direct.
