I spoke to the experts at gardeningexpress.co.uk for their tips.

VINEGAR: Very effective on small weeds.

But it can also alter your soil, stop-ping things growing there in future, so best reserve this for just block-paving and gravel driveways.

Simply pour some diluted vinegar into a spray container then squirt on to weeds’ leaves and stems.

My tip: I recycle old surface-spray bottles by rinsing, then filling them. But you can also get fancy rose-gold garden- spray bottles for just £4 on eBay.

SALT: It has been used as a herbicide and pesticide for hundreds of years and is very effective.

Mix three parts water with one part salt and leave to stand for ten minutes to make sure the salt dissolves. Spray weeds with the salty solution.

But do not use on lawns — salt can get absorbed into the soil and prevent future growth.

My tip: Asda and Aldi are matched in price with 750g of table salt for just 27p, while it is 35p elsewhere.

BAKING SODA: Can also be used on weeds, particularly those growing in cracks, and to avoid killing healthy grass and other plants.

My tip: Baking soda has so many uses as a cleaning agent and it can even be used to make your own toiletries. Snap up 1kg for just £2.03 at thesoapkitchen.co.uk.

ALCOHOL: Mix two table-spoons of rubbing alcohol and a litre of water, and fill your spray bottle.

It works by removing moisture weeds need.

My tip: Also handy for making hand sanitiser, and cleaning make-up brushes. Get 200ml from Superdrug for £1.79 or 500ml at Boots for £5.50 — and remember to nab beauty points at both stores.
