TURN UP THE HEAT: Morrisons Volcanic Vindaloo, £2, is back. The super-hot chicken curry is made with an extra hot sauce with naga chilli paste. It is also topped with whole green chillies. Add a Burnin’ Bhaji for a pocket-friendly £1.

THRICE THE SPICE: Head to Iceland and get three takeaway curry ready meals for £4. They can easily stretch to feed a family of four.

SAUCY SAVING: Treat yourself to the bargain new curry pastes from M&S which can add heat and a little bit of something different. The Kashmiri chilli gunpowder paste, £1, is the perfect marinade for a range of dishes. Try the Bombay-spice style paste, £1.50, too.

DAHL-IGHTFUL: With the Co-op’s curry super saver deal, you can feed two for £7. You get two mains, two sides and a four-pack of drinks.

YOG GONNA LOVE THIS: Skip the naans at around £1.50 each and follow Jamie Oliver’s flatbread recipe. Just mix natural yoghurt and self-raising flour, roll into dough, then into hand-sized flatbreads. Cook on a grill and brush with garlic butter. They are delicious and you can make loads at once.

ACE THE BASE: Tesco has paired up with award-winning chef Romy Gill to unveil a, five-ingredient curry base, see recipe, right, that can be used to make more than 50 dishes. Just add garam masala and veg or meat.

ROMY GILL’S FIVE-INGREDIENT CURRY BASE:

  • YOU NEED: 450g onions, chopped or grated, 50g fresh ginger and 10 cloves garlic, all peeled and chopped, 1½ tsp tumeric, 300g tomatoes, chopped, 75ml sunflower oil (or ghee or butter).
  • METHOD: Heat the oil, butter or ghee in a deep saucepan over a medium heat. Add the onions and cook for 5 minutes, stirring regularly. Add the ginger and garlic and cook for a further 20 minutes on low heat. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook for another 8 minutes. Add the turmeric, cook for 2 minutes. Leave to cool, then blend until a smooth paste. Divide into three portions and freeze until required.
