It’s the go-to messaging app for many people around the world, but it appears that Slack has crashed this morning.

According to Down Detector, the problems started at around 10:00 BST and affected users globally.

While the reason for the outage remains unclear, of those who reported issues, 71 per cent said they were unable to send messages, 19 per cent have been unable to receive them and 10 per cent have issues with the Slack app.

More than 3,500 issues have so far been logged in Britain, while a further 200 were reported in the US.

Users in Manchester, London, Cardiff and Cambridge are among those who have had experienced problems in the UK.

Slack is an instant messaging platform that is popular with businesses around the world.

‘Slack makes it easy to contact your colleagues – you can message anyone inside or outside your organisation and collaborate just as you would in person,’ it explains on its website.

‘People can work in dedicated spaces called channels, which bring the right people and information together.’

Many users have taken to Twitter to voice their complaints, while others jokingly asked whether they can skip work thanks to Slack’s problems.

‘Slack is down. Can I get the day off?’ one person wrote, as another added: ‘I love that the only thing worthy of bringing me back to Twitter was to check if Slack was down (it is, btw).’

Someone else chimed in: ‘Oh great, slack has crashed/not letting me send messages. Amazing.’

It currently appears that when users try to send a message on Slack, an error pops up reading ‘Slack couldn’t send this message’.

Attempts to ‘try again’ also fail and senders are then likely to receive the same error message.

Even still, many users claim they can see when another person is typing something even if they are unable to receive it.

‘#Slack is down. Only “typing…” No messages sent or received,’ one person wrote.

Meanwhile, another added: ‘Well, slack is down, my status changed from active to away like 10 times, I thought it was me driving me crazy but seems to be I’m still sane.’

Slack’s monitoring system has now picked upon the messaging errors faced on its platform, sharing that ‘something’s not quite right’.

An update posted at 10.35am reads: ‘Users may be experiencing trouble with sending messages in Slack. We’re investigating and will let you know as soon as we know more. We appreciate your patience in the meantime.’

The messaging platform also claims this is the only issue as of now, with notifications, search functions and connections running as usual.

BEST WHATSAPP ALTERNATIVES

If you’re considering deleting WhatsApp, you’ll be happy to hear that there are several alternative apps to choose from:

1. Telegram

With more than 400 million users, Telegram is one of the most popular WhatsApp alternatives.

While it looks very similar to WhatsApp, what sets it apart is the fact that it gives the option to set messages to self-destruct after a given period of time, leaving no trace.

Telegram also offers end-to-end encryption.

However, as a WhatsApp spokesperson pointed out, Telegram ‘does not offer end-to-end encryption by default so it’s not necessarily more secure than WhatsApp’.

2. Signal

Signal is one of the most secure messaging apps, thanks to the fact that it is open-source.

This means that the code for the app is publicly available to view, making it near-impossible for the app’s creators to sneak in any backdoors that could allow governments or hackers to spy on your messages.

3. iMessage

If you use an iPhone, you may consider simply switching to iMessage, Apple’s own messaging app.

The app has a number of impressive features included no character limits, the ability to send pictures and videos, and of course Apple’s animated emoji feature, Animoji.

Unfortunately, iMessage is only available for iPhone users, so you’ll struggle to interact with anyone using an Android.

4. Google Messages

Google’s answer to iMessage is Google Messages, an Android-only messaging service.

The app replaces your standard SMS app, and integrates with all of Google’s apps and services, making it easy to share images or use Google Assistant.

5. Facebook Messenger

If you were put off using WhatsApp due to its sharing of data with Facebook, Facebook Messenger may not be the best option for you.

However, the app offers a number of helpful features, including games, secret conversations and video calls.
