SKY has launched a brand new home security service to rival the likes of Ring and Nest.

The firm’s new Sky Protect offering includes a bunch of smart devices including a doorbell, an indoor camera, motion sensors and leak detectors worth £250.

Much like Ring, you can check in on your home inside and out whenever you like with the Sky Protect app, as well as receive alerts and speak through it.

In future updates you might even be able to see who’s at your door via your Sky TV box.

It’s all part of a new smart tech and home insurance bundle designed to give peace of mind.

So you can help prevent claims, using the smart home tech to look out for little problems before they become big ones.

However, having the smart tech doesn’t reduce the insurance premiums.

The only way you can get hold of the gadgets is by signing up to the insurance product, underwritten by Zurich Insurance.

There’s no upfront cost for the kit or admin fees.

Instead you pay through your insurance cover at a fixed price for 24 months – so the cost will vary depending on your circumstances like any other insurance.

But Sky says customers could save up to £400 over the 24 month period, compared to buying each product and comparable insurance separately.

Existing Sky customers receive a £5 discount per month when taking out a Sky Protect Smart Home Insurance policy.

You get cloud storage with your subscription as standard.

If you decide to give up on the insurance you get to keep the kit – but you won’t get the cloud storage anymore, nor incident escalation and emergency contact alerts, tech support or auto-arming.

The package includes a motion sensor and two contact sensors, as well as three leak detectors with beeping alarms and alerts to your phone as soon as unwanted water is detected.

The insurance bits come with home emergency cover – which includes access to trusted tradespeople – buildings & contents insurance or just contents cover, family legal assistance and cyber assistance cover.

It has an overall claim limit of £750,000 for buildings cover and £100,000 for contents cover.

“At Sky we have a heritage in entering new markets and shaking them up, and we’re about to do the same with home insurance,” said Stephen van Rooyen, Chief Executive Officer for Sky UK & Ireland and Chief Commercial Officer for Sky Group.

“We already make people’s lives easier at home through our TV, broadband and mobile services and with Sky Protect, we’ll be able to take the pain out of home insurance.

“From a simpler quotation process, to value you can see every day, to great tech, all working together in the Sky Protect app.

“We believe people deserve better when it comes to home protection – so we’re going to give it to them.”
