SKY broadband went down this afternoon for thousands of customers, leaving them unable to get online.

At the height of the issue, outage tracker DownDetector reported complaints from more than 1,600 customers.

It comes as households continue to rely on their internet for working from home due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sky confirmed to The Sun that it experienced an outage in Hampshire between 4.30pm and 5pm this afternoon.

Frustrated customers had been complaining on Twitter about the lack of service.

One said: “We’re in Portsmouth and Sky broadband is down – showing as connected but not working. Anyone else?”

Another said: “Sky broadband down by any chance?”

Can I get compensation if my broadband cuts out?

BROADBAND and home phone customers can get automatic compensation from providers for service or engineer visit issues.

These payments are automatic, although had been paused in March 2020 due to the coronavirus lockdown making it harder for providers to carry out repairs.

But as of June 5, regulator Ofcom says most providers should be back up and running the scheme as normal.

Under the rules, customers get £8 back for every day the service stops working after two working days of it going down.

Customers are also due £25 if an engineer misses an appointment or cancels with less than 24 hours notice.

Plus, if there’s a delay to the start of a new service you will usually get £5 for each day, including the missed start date.

But if your service goes down it’s still worth asking for compensation, even if it doesn’t fall into one of these categories.

If you’re unhappy and your provider doesn’t resolve your complaint then you can take it to one of two dispute resolution (ADR) schemes – Ombudsman Services: Communications, or Communications and Internet Services Adjustment Scheme (CISAS).

You’ll need to check which of the two your provider is signed up to.

A third person tweeted: “Sky broadband down again, second time in a few weeks, is it the whole of Hampshire again or whole of country? Please sort before 8pm for the footy.”

A fourth added: “Anyone else’s sky broadband gone down?”

Other Sky services, such as TV and mobile, weren’t affected by the outage.

According to DownDetector, 94% of the complaints were linked to Sky broadband.

A Sky spokesperson said: “We are aware that there  was a short outage to our broadband services this afternoon in the Hampshire area.

“This has now been fixed and we’re sorry for the inconvenience it may have caused.”

Sky isn’t the only company to have experienced issues today.

Earlier this afternoon, the TSB website and app went down leaving customers locked out of accounts.

How do I check the service status of Sky?

Broadband issues are frustrating for customers as thousands of people continue to work from home.

You can monitor service issues online or via the My Sky app.

To find out if you have problems in your area either use the online service checker or sign into the My Sky app.

See our Sky outages guide for more information on how to check your service and if you’re eligible for compensation.

Sky last saw problems with its service on January 7, with hundreds of customers reporting issues with their broadband.

Before that, Sky users said they were experiencing problems on July 21 in the Yorkshire and Humber area.

Sky broadband also went down in June leaving around 10,000 customers in South East London without internet.
