I’ve cooked up some tasty ideas at delicious prices . . .

FLOUR POWER: Fancy icing comes later. First, get your basic cake or biscuit right and that usually starts with flour.

Morrisons has a 1.5kg bag of plain or self-raising for 45p, saving 20p on usual price.

SHOWSTOPPERS: Look online for a creative spark. Sign up for Hobbycraft’s £35 jubilee cake-decorating online workshop, or just see its ideas hub for recipes.

Supermarket websites have great recipes too, such as Morrisons Country Life Union Jack Cake and Tesco’s Chocolate Biscuit Crown Cake.

GET KIDS COOKING: The Jubilee is a chance to get kids into the kitchen.

For fun, edible bunting, cook some biscuits.

Cut the mixture into triangles and put two holes into the top corners, cook then go crazy with the decoration.

ICE IDEA: Asda’s own brand has both red and blue icing, each for £1.50 per 250g pack, and white at £1.40 for 500g.

If you want buttercream or cream-cheese icing and not to make your own, a 400g tub of Betty Crocker’s is £1.99 at Tesco, which just beats the two for £4 offers at Morrisons and Asda.

STAND OUT: Give cakes a lift on a stunning stand. TK Maxx has a red-and-blue Talking Tables Street Party one for £4.99 (RRP £9.50), or George Home Union Jack stand for £2, which goes on sale on May 19.

THE EXTRA FACTOR: For added bling, I love Dr Oetker Jubilee mix sprinkles, with golden crowns and red, white and blue sugar strands, £2.30 at Tesco. Match with Dr Oetker Jubilee baking cases, £1.80 for 50.
