Beach huts on Britain’s coastlines can sell for hundreds of thousands of pounds if they’re in the right location and in good condition.

Only last year, a bidding war broke out on such a property for sale at Mudeford Spit in Christchurch, Dorset.

It was sold just months into the pandemic after receiving offers of £330,000, which is almost £100,000 more than the £248,000 average price of a home in Britain according to latest Nationwide Building Society figures.

With many choosing days out on the beach in this country rather than holidays abroad this year, demand for beach huts has been high.

For example, website Beachhuts says demand for huts to rent and buy has never been stronger – it has them available on 40 beaches across Britain.

It broke monthly website traffic records numerous times in 2021, with many of the best huts booked out well in advance.

It said since the pandemic began in March 2020, traffic to the site is up 300 per cent.

While many beach huts do not have the facilities to stay in overnight – and in some have a ban on doing so – they can still provide a base for days out at the beach.

You may not need to have extremely deep pockets to buy one like the Mudeford example above.

Our search on Zoopla found that it is still possible to buy a wooden hut on the beach for considerably less than the top selling ones if you are prepared to consider lesser known coastal areas or huts that may need some renovation work.

It is also worth considering huts that are further set back from the beach, perhaps in the second or third row as these tend to be cheaper.

It is worth keeping in mind that you may have to budget for additional costs such as a yearly licence fee or even ground rent if the property is being sold as leasehold. You will need to carry out your research before making a purchase.

Daniel Copley, of Zoopla, said: ‘Amid a bumper year for staycations, it’s likely there’s been an increased interest in beach huts across the UK this summer.

‘While a beach hut can provide the perfect hideaway to watch the sunset or enjoy a drink with friends, it’s worth bearing in mind the associated costs that come with purchasing a beach hut such as the yearly licence fee and the cost of maintenance.’
