Shell will appeal a landmark ruling that forced it to speed up how quickly it hits ambitious climate change targets.
A Dutch court ruled in May that by 2030 the energy supermajor must reduce its net carbon emissions by 45 per cent compared with 2019 levels.
Shell had vowed to reach net zero – meaning it will balance out any emissions it produces – by 2050.

But it had not said where it aimed to be by 2030 – and its resistance to the case has led to speculation that these targets are far more demanding than its original plans.
Shell has confirmed it will appeal.
Chief executive Ben van Beurden said: ‘We agree urgent action is needed and we will accelerate our transition to net zero.’
He added: ‘A court judgment, against a single company, is not effective.’
The case was brought by the Dutch arm of the campaign group Friends Of The Earth.
Although van Beurden has previously promised the firm will ‘rise to the challenge’ of meeting the goals, he has also warned that winding down its oil and gas business too rapidly could lead to a ‘valley of death’ for Shell.
