The chief executive of Severn Trent has been paid nearly £4million despite rising customer bills and a sewage dumping scandal.
The total package of Liv Garfield rose in value by £830,000 last year and she ended up pocketing £3.9 million.
Perks and bonuses accounted for more than £3million of the total.
Word of the massive rise emerged just months after the firm came under fire for hiking household bills by an average of 7.1 per cent.
Severn Trent provides water and treatment services to eight million people across the Midlands.
In December, the company was fined £1.5 million for illegally dumping 80,000 gallons of sewage into Worcestershire watercourses. The firm’s actions were described as ‘completely unacceptable’ by a West Midlands environment manager.
The executive director of the High Pay Centre, Luke Hildyard, said: ‘Performance-related pay should probably be contingent on avoiding the types of controversies Severn Trent has had around sewage.’
A Severn Trent spokesman said 75 per cent of the pay package is ‘directly linked to delivery’ and reflects ‘a range of customer and environmental measures’.
