ONE last winter push and spring will soon be here.

It’s nearly time for the gardeners out there to plant summer-flowering bulbs, and some types of veg.

But even if you’re a beginner, we’ve got tips on how to budget for your blooms.

GARDEN GURU: Keep track of your plants by creating a free My RHS account, courtesy of the Royal Horticultural Society, which gives reminders and care tips. Visit rhs.org.uk. The plant care companion app Blossom is also free to set up.

CLEAR PRICING: Check the clearance sections of shops such as B&Q, Argos, Robert Dyas and Toolstation for all your garden kit. It’s stock that retailers are phasing out, so you’ll often get a good price.

At the time of checking, B&Q was clearing out 1kg of Miracle-Gro universal plant feed for £3.

BULK BUY: Mix and match three packs of flowers for £12 at Dobbies and Notcutts garden centres. Or buy three packs of seeds for the price of two at B&M.

Meanwhile at Sainsbury’s, a box of 100 summer bulbs is £10, as is a bulk grow-your-own vegetable collection.

WASTE NOTHING: Use an old milk carton and pierce holes in the lid for a cheap watering can. Upcycle old tins and pots for the indoor planting phase.

Keep eggshells, coffee grounds and water from boiling pasta to enrich the soil and help plant growth.

GLADI TO SEE ’EM: Gladioli can be planted in March, and Sainsbury’s sells a bag of 40 bulbs for £4.50 — or get a 20-pack from Wilko for just £2.

TOMATO SOURCE: There’s still time to sow your Moneymaker tomato seeds, or other varieties, for a summer or autumn harvest of the fruit.

A pack with an average 100 seeds is 50p at Wilko and comes with Wilko’s germination guarantee — if the seeds fail, the shop will replace them.
