DRY January is nearly over but if you can’t afford to head out for drinks to celebrate, there is no need to miss out.

Why not recreate the fun by hosting a cocktail party at home? Here we show you how to let your hair down for less.

GET INTO THE SPIRIT: Harness your inner Tom Cruise and make your own. Pick up a one-litre bottle of Bacardi Carta Blanca white rum, reduced from £19.50 to £18 at Asda, and make mojitos, daiquiris or rum punches.

EVERYBODY FREEZE: When making margaritas (two shots of tequila, one shot triple sec and a lot of lime juice), give them some flair by popping the glasses in the freezer for a few minutes before salting the rim.

MOCK IT UP: If you are sticking with the no-alcohol rule, why not concoct your own mocktails? Create simple booze-free pina coladas by combining frozen pineapple chunks, pineapple juice, coconut milk, brown sugar and ice, and blending until smooth. Or, for a tasty take on a mojito, combine Haysmith’s cucumber and mint 0.0% Spirit (£9.99 for a 70cl bottle at Aldi), apple juice, sugar and lime juice, with fresh mint leaves and slices of peeled cucumber, and pour into a glass with lots of crushed ice.

GET SHAKING: Grab a bargain on a cocktail set, including shaker, strainer and spoon for just £6 from Poundland. While you’re there, pick up a 20-pack of umbrella sticks for £1. At studio.co.uk, you can get a very stylish set of four margarita glasses for £12.

A GOOD EGG: Or, rather than buy all the cocktail-making kit, why not use an egg cup as a spirit measure, a jam jar as a shaker, along with a simple tea strainer?
