Senator Kashim Ibrahim Shettima, a politician and banker from Nigeria, has served as Borno Central’s senator since 2019.
He served as Borno State’s governor from 2011 until 2019. In the 2023 presidential election, he will stand as Bola Tinubu’s running partner and is a member of the All Progressives Congress.
Shettima, the son of Northern Nigerian Governor Kashim Ibrahim, graduated from the Maiduguri and Ibadan Universities.
Kashim Shettima Religion: Is He Muslim?
Kashim Shettima is a Muslim by religion, and he supports the Muslim community. On Sunday, Bola Tinubu selected the current Muslim senator and former governor of Borno state.
To foster racial harmony, presidential candidates from the major political parties have traditionally selected running mates who practice a different religion. However, Tinubu, a Muslim as well, departs from this custom.
Having met Buhari in northern Katsina state, Tinubu, a Yoruba Muslim from southwest Nigeria, announced to the media that he had chosen Kashim Shettima, 55, to be his running partner.
Shettima’s choice raises the possibility that Tinubu is also looking for a deputy widely regarded by influential people in the north as a significant voting bloc.
Tinubu’s Running Mate Biography
After finishing his education, Tinubu’s running mate started working in the banking sector and eventually advanced to hold several top executive positions at banks.
Around the middle of the 2000s, Shettima took over as office manager of Zenith Bank in Maiduguri, but she left that position in 2007 to join Governor Ali Modu Sheriff’s state cabinet.
Kashim was elected governor in 2011 after serving in the cabinet for four years. In 2015, he was re-elected with a more significant margin. However, his time in government was dominated mainly by the deadly Boko Haram insurgency. Shettima was elected to the Senate later in 2019.

In Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria, Kashim Shettima was born into the family of Sir Kashim Ibrahim. He is married to Nana Shettima, and the couple has three children.
In the 1950s, Nigerian politician Shettima Kashim Ibrahim held the positions of chairman of the Native Administration in Borno State and minister for social services.
He held the conventional title of the Waziri of the Emirate of Borno after two previous Waziris were compelled to leave owing to controversies in the Borno local administration.
Kashim Shettima Political Career
From 2007 to 2011, Kashim Shettima served as a commissioner for five different ministries. In the ANPP primary elections in January 2011, engineer Modu Fannami Gubio was selected as a governor candidate.
On April 26, 2011, Shettima defeated Muhammad Goni of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with 531,147 votes, while Goni garnered 450,140.
Shettima received awards for leadership in 2014 and 2015 from the Nigeria Union of Journalists, a national organization, and in 2016 from Tell magazine.
When he won the Borno Central Senatorial District election in February 2019, he took the place of Senator Babakaka Bashir.
