Normally when you have an invite link to join a group, you can simply enter at any time.

WhatsApp even recently increased group chat sizes to a mammoth 512 maximum participants.

And WhatsApp is also working on a Communities feature that lets you create “groups of groups”.

Now the app sleuths at WABetaInfo have uncovered another change to WhatsApp group chats.

The tech expert mine the “beta test” version of WhatsApp for key updates that are under development.

And one is a group membership approval system.

“When group admins enable this feature, all people that want to join the group by using a group invite link need to be manually approved by a group admin,” WABetaInfo explained.

“And this event will show up in the group chat.

“In fact, there will be a new section right within the group info where group admins can manage all incoming requests from people that want to join the group.”

You’ll have to toggle the feature on within group settings to enable group requests.

Sadly it’s impossible to say exactly when this new feature will go live.

It could take days, weeks or months to launch – or it might be scrapped before it ever rolls out to the world.
