BINNING food is bad for the environment and your pocket.

Yet every year we chuck 4.5million tonnes, according to campaign group Love Food Hate Waste. As part of Food Waste Action Week, we are sharing a few tricks to help your meals go further . . .

SKIN-NY CHIPS: When cooking potatoes or veg, use the peel to make tasty chips. Rinse and pat dry your peelings then pop into a roasting tray with a good drizzle of oil, salt and any spices you fancy.

Then simply roast them in the oven until brown and crispy. Another favourite trick is to put leftover salad into the blender with a few nuts and cheese for a decent pesto.

APP FAB: I am obsessed with apps Olio and Too Good To Go, which let you get nearly-out-of-date food at a bargain prices. You pay a small fee (around £3-4) and get a “magic bag” of whatever hasn’t sold in a particular venue that day.

Brands on the apps include Costa, Greggs and Caffe Nero. I spotted £6 pizzas from Papa John’s last week.

VEGGIE GOOD IDEA: Store any root vegetables in the dark to make them last longer. It stops items such as potatoes from sprouting, too.

IT’S A DATE: Best-before dates let you know when food may go past its best but it’s the use-by date that you should go by. The basic lesson is: Don’t throw away perfectly good food.

It’s also worth checking out your local area to see if you have a Rogers Wholesale Foods store or similar. They sell food “gone past best” at bargain prices. For example, I’ve seen cereal in bulk packs of four for just £2.

FREEZE A JOLLY GOOD FELLOW: If you’ve got fresh food nearing its best-before date, freeze it (in a clever way) for a later date. For example, cheese can be grated and then frozen.

Meat can be frozen in portion sizes (for example, for two people, freeze two chicken breasts in cling film together). Herbs can be put into ice-cube trays with water — and the frozen cubes added to dinners later.
