It said the fall came as ‘competition returned to the market’.

Pimlico Plumbers was set up in 1979 by the flamboyant Charlie Mullins, who left school at 15 with no qualifications and began work as a plumber.

The London-based firm has around 200 staff and a star-studded roster of celebrity clients, which includes James Bond actor Daniel Craig, Dame Helen Mirren and guitarist Eric Clapton.

In 2022, profits soared to £73.5 million, but this was almost entirely due to the near-£74 million sale of intellectual property to another Pimlico Plumbers company.
