SAINSBURY’S will shut 200 cafes and replace them with chains including Starbucks and Gourmet Burger Kitchen as part of a shake-up of its stores.
The supermarket said 2,000 jobs are at risk due to the planned closures this spring.

Workers impacted by the change will be prioritised for other roles in the business, Sainsbury’s said.
Sainsbury’s will replace its cafes with “Restaurant Hubs” following a trial at a store in Selly Oak in Birmingham.
The food courts will offer hot food and drink from a range of brands including Caffe Carluccio’s, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Ed’s Diner and Slim Chickens.
It is planning to open 30 more of the hubs in the next year, but hasn’t confirmed whether that will mean more cafe closures.
In the meantime, a total of 67 Sainsbury’s cafes will remain open while the grocer reviews its rollout plans.
The supermarket chain will also close hot food counters in 34 stores and “simplify” bakeries at 54 branches.

The Sun has asked how many workers and which stores will be affected by these changes.
Sainsbury’s boss Simon Roberts said: “As we go through this period of transition, we have taken the difficult decision to close 200 of our cafes next month.
“We have spoken to all colleagues affected by these changes today and are absolutely committed to supporting them in any way we can during this uncertain time.
“Of course, we understand this is very unsettling for our colleagues, but we must keep adapting our business to make sure we are offering customers the best possible food and drink at affordable prices.”

Sainsbury’s isn’t the only supermarket giant making big changes to its shops.
The Sun revealed last month that Tesco is closing 317 deli counters as part of a big store shake-up.
It also put 1,400 shelf stacker jobs at risk.
Last year, Asda put 5,000 jobs at risk as it launched a major restructuring plan.
