A HISTORIC pie and mash will close after 100 years of service and fans have declared it a sad time for all.

The store is known for serving delicious meat pies daily until around 2pm flavours include traditional beef pies with homemade mash and you can even get classic jellied eels.

In a statement on the Manze’s website, George wrote that, despite rumours, the business would not be closing “by the end of the week”, and that the shop would remain open until his retirement in 2025.

Doors are expected to shut for the final time in March of next year.

Next year will mark 45 years that George has worked in the business and will mark a staggering 111 years since the store first opened.

Fans took to Facebook to share fond memories of the restaurant and to express their grief.

One user said: “So sad, but completely understand happy retirement to them.”

“I love a bit of Pie n Mash, sad news but enjoy your retirement,” another said.

A third user declared: “Sad time it is.”

“Aw I used to go with my nan and grandad when I was little,” said someone else.

If you are looking for pie and mash after March of next year there are several other Manze’s locations that remain open. 

It has sites in Tower Bridge and Peckham which are still serving delicious pies.

Many restaurant chains have been struggling to get by over the past few years.

Energy costs have risen and more shoppers than ever are choosing to order online rather than head into stores.

This has left some retailers grappling with budgets and having no choice but to close stores to cut costs.

Patisserie Valerie has already closed 170 branches in the past few months.

Taco Bell who hasn’t been on the scene long pulled down the shutters on a drive-thru restaurant in Aberdeen.

Even Wetherspoon has struggled to brace the storm with 40 pubs closing down last and as many as 20 preparing to shut this year.

Costa Coffee is due to shut two cafes but the end of January this year.
