As the Lionesses head to Sunday’s World Cup final showdown against Spain, a record number of women are betting on football. 

A fifth of bets – 21 per cent – on England’s first three games were placed by women, says Ladbrokes and Coral owner Entain. 

That compared to 17 per cent in the 2022 Women’s Euros, and 13 per cent during the last World Cup in 2019.

At last year’s men’s World Cup, some 17 per cent of bets were put on by women. Across the pond, the strength of the US women’s team has also been credited for the rising number of Americans betting on women’s football. 

According to Bet MGM, which is owned by Entain, three times as many women bet on the US team’s opening game against Vietnam than on Lionel Messi’s debut for Inter Miami. 

Entain chief executive Jette Nygaard-Andersen, who took over in 2021, has said she wants to see more women gambling
