Real Madrid has opposed a private equity deal for La Liga in Spain. Londonbased private equity firm CVC has taken a 10 per cent stake in the league.
The deal, worth £2.3 billion, values La Liga at £20.6 billion. But executives at Real, one of the country’s biggest teams, were left out of negotiations and feel blindsided.
Barcelona’s position is not yet clear. CVC’s investment would help clubs recover from the pandemic. Under the deal CVC will manage broadcast, sponsorship and digital rights for La Liga, which runs Spain’s top two football divisions. In recent years CVC has snapped up stakes in Six Nations, English Premiership and Pro14 rugby tournaments.
