ChangeChecker has updated its latest scarcity index which tracks the most sought after coins in circulation over the last three months.

The index is based on how many of each design are listed as “collected” by ChangeChecker users and the number of times they’ve been requested as a swap.

It’s worth noting that some collectors also value the mintage of coins, meaning how many have been made, but this is something the index doesn’t take into account.

Plus, coins are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them, so you aren’t guaranteed these prices.

But as the coins have been circulated, you might find one that’s worth a small fortune in your wallet or down the back of your sofa.

These are the coins collectors want to get their hands on the most:

The rarest and most valuable 10p coins according to the scarcity index is the Yeoman Warder and Zebra crossing designs.

They were both minted as part of a set of 26 different designs on the theme of the A-Z of Britain – the first ever commemorative 10p coins.

In 2018, 220,000 of each letter were entered into circulation but in 2019, the Royal Mint released more, although how many varied by design, making some rarer than others.

The Yeoman Warder has managed to stay in top place since February and sells for up to £3 on eBay.

“It’s English Breakfast time this quarter as this 10p has climbed a huge 16 places on our A-Z 10p Index,” it says on the Changechecker website.

“This is definitely the one to watch.”

Unsurprisingly, the Kew Gardens 50p coin is still the most sought after among collectors, according to the index.

The Royal Mint has confirmed it’s the rarest in circulation – only 210,000 were ever released making them pretty hard to come by.

In comparison, the second rarest 50p coins are the 2018 Peter Rabbit and Flopsy Bunny designs and 1.4million of each them were put into circulation.

On eBay, the Kew Gardens coin sells for up to £230.

It’s the third time in three quarters that the coin has scooped second place.

Circulated versions of these coins typically sell for up to £28 on eBay.

Changechecker said: “The ones to watch are definitely Pentathlon (having climbed 10 places last quarter and a further six this quarter) and Shooting, which climbed two places last quarter and a further two places this quarter.”

In particular, you keep an eye out for the Northern Ireland design, which has once again taken the top spot as the most sought after £2 coin.

One recently sold on eBay for £55 – over 27 times face value.

The second most valuable £2 coin is the England version of the same design which fetches up to £21 online if it’s been in circulation.

“The First World War (Kitchener) £2 has climbed up a space after also climbing two spaces last quarter, so this could be one to watch over the coming months,” added Changechecker.
