Monarch makes shock announcement after 52-year reign
Denmark’s queen has announced her abdication in a surprise New Year’s Eve address.
Margrethe II, whose role is largely ceremonial, said she would step down on 14 January, which is the anniversary of the 1972 death of her father, King Frederik IX, and her succeeding him on the throne.
