IOPC condemns stops based on ‘stereotypes and racial bias’ and cites case of teenager reportedly stopped 60 times

Black and ethnic minority people need protecting from unfair searches carried out by officers based on “stereotypes and racial bias”, the police watchdog has said as it highlighted the case of one teenager who was reportedly stopped 60 times, and sometimes more than once a day.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct carried out a special review and made 18 recommendations for police across England and Wales to radically reform use of the controversial power.
