Previously, PS5 owners could only invite their friends to lobbies on the console, and they had to be in each others’ friends lists.

Sony stated that some games will need to be updated to support the new feature, and gave examples of it in action in Baldur’s Gate 3.

PlayStation is also creating new widgets for sharing multiplayer links in Discord, which will be updated live to show how many players have joined a session.

Sony will also let PS5 owners share a link to their PSN profile from the PS app and console on other messaging platforms.

This makes it easier for strangers to send friend requests without looking up the other person’s username on the PS app.

The move makes sense for Sony as the company is starting to divert its attention to mobile gamers.

PlayStation is already developing spinoff games from its well-known franchises for the mobile platform.

The company has started to embrace a cross-platform future, as more PlayStation exclusives are making their way to PC.

Sony also recently announced that it will allow PC gamers to earn PlayStation trophies through an overlay.

After allowing Discord to be used on the console and shareable profile links, the PS5’s walled garden is getting broken down, which may be good for players.

Of course, you’ll still need a PS Plus subscription to join a multiplayer session, unless it’s a free-to-play game like Fortnite.
