Peter Alliss, the voice of the BBC’s golf coverage for decades, has died at the age of 89. A statement issued by the former Ryder Cup player’s family on Sunday confirmed the death of Alliss – who had been on commentary duties for the Masters just last month – was “unexpected but peaceful”.
As a professional golfer, Alliss returned several high finishes in the Open Championship and won multiple tournaments. He played in the Ryder Cup, then for GB&I, in 1953, 1957, 1969, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1967 and 1969. His broadcasting began at the 1961 Open, with Alliss becoming the BBC’s lead golf commentator 17 years later. Alliss was voted into the sport’s hall of fame in 2012.
